Is it safe to plant (bell) peppers around the base of clematis as a natural shade for the roots? I love peppers and would like to plant enough to freeze for next winter but I'm also very short on space. So I was thinking I could solve both issues by doing this. Would there be a problem with pollination of the peppers? All the plants would be in my back yard which is only about 30'X 30'.

Although it isn't necessary to shade the roots of clematis, it wouldn't hurt to plant your bell peppers there. Do be sure to supply enough water and nutrients for both plants. The clematis won't have an adverse effect on to the pollination of the peppers. Good luck!
