How many years to flower?

Hi,

I have a Sweet Autumn Clematis and a Clematis virginiana. Both were purchased from Brushwood nursery. SAC is three years old and virginiana two. Neither has bloomed for me. I have hard-pruned them both each winter/spring. Am I doing something wrong? Or they just take a few years before starting to bloom.

I don't have either of those but I would think they should have bloomed by now. I've gotten several clematis from Dan at Brushwood and have been very pleased with all of them. All were planted in the Spring as soon as he shipped and all have bloomed at least some the same year. I am also in zone 9 in California (Petaluma). Things have been kind of dead on this forum for a while. I hope someone with experience with those two cultivars comes along and has an answer.

Do you feed them when you prune? If there are not enough nutrients, that would keep them from blooming.

Yes,

I have fed them organic Rose and Flower fertilizer during summer - not at the time of pruning. I will try starting the fertilizer routine early and double the amount of fertilizer. Hopefully that will get them going.
