Looked around at my usual places for clematis and couldn't find it besides Joy Creek which carries it but is out. I did find it at Completely Clematis linked below. Just a few things to keep in mind about this nursery and the plant. What you get from Completely Clematis will be much smaller than what you get from most other sources and more expensive. Not an issue if it is a clematis you just have to have. Also, this clematis will either do well in your garden or not. In mine it is an underperformer and is very prone to mildew. You may not have these issues with it but wanted to let you know of its potential habits.

another question to you both -- i see this clem sometimes listed as a viticella or texensis. is this a different clem or just classified both ways? If they're different, i want the viticella . . .

Joyce there is only one Etoile Rose. See the link below and it might explain why you have seen it listed as a viticella vs. a texensis.

Etoile Rose rose does not mildew much for me, which is odd. I have humid summers and have an awful time with other viorna group hybrids, but not with this one. It has never gotten that tall for me, though, perhaps 4+' at best, and is not as floriferous as other similar hybrids like Duchess of Albany or the like.

Miguel, I wonder if its underperformance in our gardens is related to why the hirsutissimas also do poorly: the summers are too hot and/or humid?

Could be Michael. I know I have tried everything to get hirsutissimas to bloom for me and they don't do diddly except give me green ferny growth that browns out and then regenerates itself later in the season. I have tried planting them in gravelly soil that I provide adequate moisture to and they do the same. Carol Lim has had the same issue with them in her garden. It is really frustrating since they look so cool in the pictures I have seen.

I'm guessing they need a different environment, one with less humidity. You, Carol and I live in zones that have truly damp summers, and I at least have sandy soil which they also don't seem to prefer. I'm trying them in pots one last year, letting them emerge a little earlier inside to see if they can bloom before the humidity hits. If not I'm giving them away this year!

I have toyed with doing the same thing Michael. I just keep thinking one more year and perhaps they will bloom. I have both a hirsutissima and a scotti that are nonperformers in my garden.

Miguel, I'm at that point where I'm done toying with them! They have this year to do well, otherwise there are many others out there who would appreciate them!

In my emails with Jerome, it was my understanding that this clematis was being discontinued and for the reasons both Miguel and Michael have cited above.

My line of thinking at the time was that I too had been looking for Etoile Rose for quite some time and for the couple of $ that it was going to cost, it was worth trying. If I have to shovel prune or put another type 3 in with it, to beef it up, then so be it.

Don't know why I didn't think of it earlier, but Etoile Rose, if anyone is still looking for it, is available on the Donahue's Clematis website.

Forgot about this thread Michael, until it popped back up. I have one (scotti version) in a pot with three other clematis so it might be removed some time in the future if it fails to perform. That way I will have more room for other things in there!! The other one is in a pot with a japanese maple so it may get crowded out in the long run anyway. I prefer the japanese maple to it anyways!
