No experience here trying to grow clematis anywhere near a black walnut tree. I do know that quite a few plants can't because of juglone in the buds and roots but clematis is a new one for me. There might even be some mixed results depending on the type you are attempting to grow.

Just doing a Google search turned up a list that shows some plants that are not sensitive to juglone and clematis is among them on several of the sites I found but one site that says they are not sensitive does say if the plants start declining, then you should move them. Certainly doesn't sound too definitive to me!

Following is a list of plants you might try growing under walnuts. If you see them decline, move them or lose them!

Landscape plants: arborvitae, autumn olive, red cedar, catalpa, clematis,

You might try it with a readily available and inexpensive clematis and see how it does and then use your results to see if others will live well near a black walnut.

Anyone else out there with experience with clematis and black walnut trees????

Thank you for the feed back. I think I will stay away from planting a clematis near the Black Walnut. Just maybe some one will still come in & say they are growing clematis near a Black Walnut. MaMoo

I lived in a rental for a few years that had a huge black walnut out front. I really didn't have any problems growing under it. I had ferns, bulbs, many shade perennials. They might not have been as robust as not under a black walnut but they all lived and bloomed.

Clemmie was about twenty feet away, Armandii and was huge and gorgeous.

One of my more vigerous clems is growing within 6' of a Black Walnut and all other clems(approx 20) are doing fine, all growing within 25' of the tree.

Polish Spirit lives within 15' of the trunk of a 100 year old walnut tree. Rubromarginata has given up the ghost twice (close and near). Dawn is doing will. Radar Love didn't make it (not really a loss though-I only have at least 200 seedling a year!). Texensis flowers well but not a vigorous plant. Mrs. Cholmondeley and Markham's Pink love it.

Other plants would include bulbs, flox, siberian iris, iris, ajuga, primula, foxglove, viola, spiderwort, english bluebells, climbing hydrangea, hostas, bleeding hearts, Apricot tree, columbine, and weeds of all sorts!

I had a chain link fence that went around my yard...I placed numerous clematis and other climbing vines on it, and I had a HUGE Black walnut tree right in the middle of one fence..Well, the clematis did absolutely fine..all of them. The only thing that didn't do so well was the cup and saucer vine..But I think it needed more sun. To be honest..some of the clematis started climbing the tree, so I supported it..and up it went. I have a Clematis about 30 ft from my Black Walnut, has never grown taller than 2 ft high. I am relocating it to the front this year will be about 65 ft away and on the opposite of the house now..
