With a lot of effort it can be done, but propagating clematis from cuttings is a difficult and often unsuccessful undertaking. It is far easier to attempt to generate new plants from layering.

The easiest and most successful method for Propagating Clematis is the "Layering Technique"..I score the bottom with a razor blade and dip in rooting hormone before pegging in the soil...check out my link...Jeanne

Jeanne - great minds think alike, LOL!! That's the same layering link I referred to. It's hard to explain layering well to newbies without illustrations, which is why I like it :-)

btw, I've had great success without the need for the notching or hormone treatment - this is truly a very simple and nearly always successful method of propagation.

GG..good to hear it works without nicking and hormoning!!..Will test that on a few to see!!...I know some of my vines that have grown along on the ground have rooted on their own and was shocked to find them...let those little leaf axils hit some dirt and they go crazy...LOL...Jeanne
