What can I say, I was bored yesterday.

The balcony

The crocuses are already done blooming. Most of the greenery you see in the flower boxes are the tulips, which haven't budded out yet.

Clematis Palette #1

I have 3 Clematis Palette, but this is the only one with reddish leaves, so I'm wondering if it was labeled wrong at the nursery. No flowers on any of them last year. Hopefully I'll get some this year so I'll know what I have.

Clematis Asao #1

I have 2 Asao, and both are growing so quickly that you can practically see it with your bare eye. They even have buds at the tips of the new growth, so I should have flowers much earlier than I would have otherwise expected. I bought them from a nursery mid-summer last year, and they were each about 8' tall and had flowers on them when I brought them home.

Clematis Inspiration

This one was thrown in as a freebie with the other ones from Koi Gardens. I don't know that I would have chosen it on my own, since it doesn't cling or climb. I've put it in the corner and am hoping it will trail down and provide some pretty flowers next to my parking spot. I'm definitely pleased that it's putting out a bud so early, no matter what else it might do over the course of the season.

Violetta, I love your random post showing your sproutings. I wouldn't worry too much about the reddish colored leaves on one of your Palettes. The first leaves a clematis throws up in the spring may be adversely affected by alternating periods of cool and warm weather. Let the plant mature before attempting to decide whether it is a mislabeled clematis or not.

Like you, the warm weather here is prematurely causing some of my clematis to begin pushing up new growth. I have several that are already 4 to 6 inches up and we are still about a month away from our last average frost day (April 15th). I have gone back and forth about whether to pinch the tops out since doing so is just going to encourage more growth. I finally bit the bullet yesterday and did pinch back a couple of the taller ones since if I wait, I know I will be hesitant to do it later if we don't get any more frosts this year. I guess it is a wait and see game from here on out!

Once again thanks for showing pictures of your spring growth.

I have no idea whether this new growth is premature or not, since this is my first time ever growing anything outside. Maybe Buyorsell will weigh in on that. We very rarely get freezing temps around here, so I wouldn't be surprised if we were done for the season. I hope hope hope...

See why I keep whining about space limitations, though? Look at what I have crammed into that little space! I barely have enough room to sit out on my balcony with a book if I want to - but it's well worth it. (*big grin*)

Ohhh to see something green outside. That won't happen here for at least another month and a half to 2 months, if the snow ever melts. So I guess I'll just have to enjoy you more southern gardeners gardens for now.

It's so fun to see them coming up! This is the first spring I've ever had outdoor plants. I'm definitely hooked!

Violetta, I do see why you are limited space-wise. Don't know if you have ground floor room or if you live upstairs in your complex. One thing to consider is if there are common areas in your complex, you might be able to convince the association to let you plant them in the ground after you convince them how beautiful clematis are. Just a thought!

Miguel, that's an interesting thought! Once my balcony starts going nuts I'll bet it wouldn't be difficult to talk everyone in the association into it.

(And thank you - you just reminded me that I meant to call management to ask them about something else...)

Neat pictures. I really enjoyed seeing them. Seeing the clemmies wake up is one of the best parts of early spring.

They are not early, this is normal time for them to wake up here. Many of my II's have buds on them.
