Do you get a lot of blooms?? How long does your bloom?? How big are your blooms??

No problem...that's what gardening sites are all about questions,sharing and learning..to be honest...It was a baby in my garden last year...so I need more time to truly give you my opinion..Hopefully, someone who has grown it longer than me can say..I just thought you'd like to see a pic..so far this season it has shot up..but still ONE VINE...grrrrrr...so I am hoping to see more..Some Clematis take more time to get going...whereas Clematis "Comtesse de Bouchard" ,"Polish Spirit",and others have tons of vines popping up from the ground...sowwy, Jeanne

Jeanne - Im having the same experience w/ Claire de Lune - last year was just my second year & I only had a few blooms; but I do see a couple more vines popping up now after I cut it back almost to the ground a couple weeks ago so Im hopeful this year that it's gotten more settled in. It's definitely not as vigorous as some others.

Claire de Lune is a very compact Group 2. I have a couple that I have been growing for about 3 years. It can be slow to start. I have had my best spring flowering on old wood, in fact, one year it accidentally got cut back to about 8 inches & it made the most amazing blooming mound. For me, Claire is VERY early,actually mine is blooming right now, despite our unseasonable foul & cold weather. I'll try to take a picture this afternoon.

Chloe and Grace..thanks for the input...Last year my ONE VINE..LOL..broke and I cut it down to the ground..and it rebounded...so saying you got more vines pop up the 2nd year is hopeful for me..thanks...It's a beautiful Clematis and I had suspected it might be one of the "slower ones" to get established in the garden..thanks again..Jeanne

Can any one tell me does it need full sun or part sun and some shade??

Right now I have The President and have had it for years but that is the only one I ever grew. I never have to do anything to it and it always has a lot of blooms. I bought the land next to me a few years ago and how have a big lot 25' x 125' that I have planted 20 roses on it about 4 years ago and moved my one Clematis over there last year and cut it in half and planted it in two different places. This year I'm getting more of a feel of what I want to do to my yard and one of the plants I want more of is the Clematis. They are so very pretty. So far I have order Romona which will grow on a new arch I'm getting along with a climbing rose I have planted. I've also got another 20 or so roses that I had order to add this spring.

I'm going to order Claire De Lune. I think even with it being a slow grower it would really nice. Jeanne picture really help seeing what it looks like

LadyButterfly..Let me introduce you to what we refer to as the "Clematis Bible"..it's called COTW (Clematis on the Web) just click on "Clematis A-Z" and then the first letter of the name of the clematis and it will give you info...When someone says Pruning group 2 what they mean is you DON'T Prune(Because it Blooms on old wood) except to shape or remove dead vines(Those usually are from damage or winter kill)..Where as with pruning group 3s you HARD PRUNE each year to once inch above the first leaf axil for it blooms on New Wood. I must say I treat both my Pruning Group 2s and 3s like group3s the first couple years just to get their roots well established...When she said a short vine...she meant it only gets 6 feet + tall whereas they can grow 6 feet wide and easily 10 to 12 feet tall...this is important when deciding where you wish to grow them to make sure they have room and you have good support for them...Hope this helps...Jeanne

Clematis On The Web said that Claire De Lune likes semi-shade...What is semi-shade?? I would like to put it in a place that gets full sun for about 2 - 3 hours and the rest of the day it gets just bright shade/bright light. Do you think that will be okay??

Clematis are like Roses...they both love sun but Clematis like to keep their roots Moist...when someone says they like shade...they generally mean to plant where they get morning sun and is shaded from the hot afternoon sun as it will cause their flowers to fade and look ugly or even wilt until watered again..I think most clematis need at least 5 hours sun...but with that many hours and some bright shade will probably work..try it there ..you can always move it..mine is in an area similar to that...where my house shades it then mid day it gets full sun and then shaded in the afternoon...ya just gonna love COTW...Jeanne

Jeanne, That is how it is in the one area I want to put Claire De line..I think by 12 noon bight shade till evening. I'll going to get Claire De Lune. I also want to get a few more but don't know as to what to get as of yet.

Yes, I had seen your post over at Gardenbuddies..that is the Clematis that I am talking about in my previous posting...that I bought at Walmart last year and is Mislabled...I am hoping I can get some of my Clematis friends online to help me id it this year...sorry I can't be of help to what the name is...thanks for the compliment on my gardens...it's been such a pleasure transforming it..and I am hoping to see great improvement this year as it is getting more mature...Year 2 for it..WOOHOO...Jeanne

YEP!! Snow!!! I was lucky I didn't get any but I think the Peoria and Farmington area might have gotten it yesterday or the day before. We might have it in the 40's or 50's by next Monday but our weather changes to much lately so who knows. Well at least this gives me more time to buy what I want...I have a few plants that came in the mail so I'm just sitting back and hoping I don't kill them before I get them in the yard. They are sitting in a sunny window right now.

I have a sneaky feeling that it is an immature Clematis "Josephine" bloom but will know better when I see this years blooms..that bloom was from last year..I have so many buds forming on all of my clematis as I type this and am so excited!!...Will be uploading them to my site as soon as they open!!....Jeanne

Ladybutterfly...sometimes with a new Clematis the first blooms are so off...I really am not sure...this year I should have a more mature clematis and can id it..sowwy about your snow..yuck..that is why I live in the south...I hate snow except for the 3 days that we use to go skiing and then I was ready to get the heck outta there...I will post a beautiful blue Clematis that I think you might like over on your other post..it's really a great grower and vigorous in my gardens....Jeanne

Jeanne, I thought the same thing when I had seen the picture at Wayside. It is ugly!!! I do hope it doesn't look like Wayside's this year. Wayside flower is a lot darker and has a yellow center. I didn't like the yellow center...yours didn't show a yellow center. I guess we will just have to wait for yours to bloom. Hope it is soon!!!

It bloomed quite a bit last year and they all looked like the picture I posted except a deeper pink..they tend to fade in full sun..and the one I posted was a bit faded...hey I sent you an private message over on GB..dark purple fast growing...think "Polish Spirit"...Jeanne

Just a footnote...

I have a Claire De Lune which blooms in June. It is in early morning sun, and evening sun with shade the rest of the day. Here it is blooming in June of this year.

Someone stated above that it's a group 2, and blooms on old wood? Well, I'm having quite the surprise right now! It is planted with a Hagley which blooms August/September here. I noticed some growth going over the deck - 8 feet+ - and thought it was Hagley, but it's Claire De Lune and it's blooming again! It's never gone this far up or bloomed at this time of year. The blooms are just as big as in the spring which is great!
