another pruning question

Last year I bought my first clematis. A few weeks later Lowes was about to throw out a diverse group of scraggly clementis at $2.25 and $2.50 each. How could I let this happen, so I ended up with 14 plants. Thank you Jeanne for the photo with excellent instructions.. I now know how to prune the planted clematis that came in quart pots. The 2 Nelly Moser's came in large pots which originally sold for $26.00 while the quart containers originally sold for $13.00. I assume that the larger containers which had numerous flowers are 2 year old plants. How do I prune these? By the way they all survived.

Hey Robin!!..Your larged potted clematis most probably are 2yr olds...Did you plant them last year??..Clematis "Nelly Moser" is a pruning group 2 which means NO PRUNE except to shape and keep in bounds AFTER they have finished their bloom cycle..
Did you fertilize yet?..If they have multiple vines already and are growing like gangbusters you can just let them go BUT if they are one or two vine wimpies...then hard prune and you'll enjoy much better blooms later on this season and a healthier more vigorous clematis in the years to come..Why, oh why can't I find bargains like the rest of yall..not many people grow clematis in Texas so our Nurseries don't really stock many..boohoo poor me..call me the Online Shopping Nut...Jeanne

robin, I went bargain shopping last fall too. I bought 3 large clematis (just root balls at the time, really) in Pikes for $5 each when they had been selling fo $49! HA!

One of them is a Nelly it bloomed once last fall. I'm not sure what they other two are, but who cares!

I didn't have a choice all three died back to the ground, but they are coming up great now.

Hey Jeanne, it's nice to be back. Happy to hear that you are still here to answer all of our questions. One of the two Moserswas planted last fall. It is doing beautifully. Theother was buried in its' pot in the ground. I will follow your suggestions. One more question please. Once I cut back the smaller plants as pictured in your photo can I let them continue to grow thereafter or do they have to be kept that size? Wat is going on with this computer. I can't correct a word or spelling? I started by saying two Nelly Mosers and ended up with Moserswas. Oh well, thanks for understanding. Maybe you can fix this problem as well?????
Buford, we both did quite well didn't we. fourteen is outrageous for a first timer but Jeanne has patiently walked me through it.

Robin..No, once you have hard pruned your pruning group 2's in year 2 ..then you just let 'em grow!!!..You surely will plant the one that you left in the pot?..Then you can hard prune that one ...They should have grown a bigger and stronger root system by then..You don't keep your clematis at the size you see in my pic..that was the "Spring" hard prune for my Viticellas/Pruning group 3's..this is the only variety you do that to except the Herbaceous/Integrifolias because they flower on vines that emerges directly from the ground.
