Clivia need very good drainage. They would probably not appreciate Iowa dirt very well!

Clivias do great in the groud, but they do need good drainage. They also need a fair amount of loose well mulched root covering. They grow on a forest floor in the leaf litter. As long as they are protected from the sun and the roots don't drown, you should be fine during the warmer part of the year.
