Have you checked your local nurseries/garden centers? The grower I work for has been shipping them locally for several weeks, many in bud getting ready to pop.

As an aside, most clematis will grow quite well in 3-4 hours of sun, so a morning sun situation is ideal. Blooming may be slightly delayed in a shadier position compared to a sunnier one, but any of the bicolors (like 'Nelly Moser') will look best in this situation as they will not fade. As a rule of thumb, pale colors will peform better in part shade while the more intensely toned, darker colors look best in more sun.

Jennie..I know you can create a profile over at Brushwood and sign in and then click on to be notified when Dan gets a particular one in that you want if he is out of them..that is what I do and he notifies me by email that my variety is in stock ...I don't know of other online nurseries that do that..as far as getting something you are wanting so badly..usually you should start ordering in Jan/Feb as most are stocked up and won't send until your planting time...Have you checked GardenCrossings,Joycreek and Koi Garden Club?..If you would like I can send you their websites..

btw, the grower I work for supplies various clematis to several of the larger mail order houses, including both Joy Creek and Chalk Hill (these tend to be primarily vendors, not growers themselves). So you can often get the same clematis locally as you are able to order online. Just an FYI :-))

Jennie, once the websites are updated (normally in the late winter for spring and mid to late summer for fall), people can start placing orders for delivery. If you see something you want, you need to place your orders then or risk missing out on your ability to get what you want.

GG, not all of us live in areas where the variety of clematis locally available are as bountiful as those of you living in the PNW. You all have loads more options to buy locally than the vast majority of us do so ordering mail order is the only way to get anything other than the normal types of LFHs available at the big box stores or the nurseries. You would go bonkers if you had to move where I live and had to depend on local sources for clematis! ;)

I agree with Miguel, in the past I have gone a little nuts trying to find some of the more unusual varieties here in Northern Ohio. Thanks to our clematis friends here on GW I have been introduced to many of the wonderful online vendors and have some beautiful new clems in my yard. I received several from Koi last August and all of them are coming up very nicely with buds on the old wood that I had cut back at planting as well as new growth coming up from the roots.

Wow, thank you for all your responses; I'm looking at the other sites now, and it looks like Joy Creek has the one I like best, Moonlight. But it's a great idea to check the local nurseries too, I'll have to make a list of the cultivars I liked best.

I tend to surf as my four-year old is going to sleep, since the computer is in the room next to his, and he likes to know I'm close by; I get the nicest dreams about flowers from it myself, so no complaints.

I'm with Miguel on this..Those in areas that have tons of clematis in their local nurseries are so fortunate..I've begged several of my locals to carry them but they say Texans don't buy nor do they grow clematis...duhhhhh...WRONG!!..So, I hafta get online in January and start making my orders so I don't lose out on the ones I am dying to get for my gardens...Jeanne

Please don't jump on me! I only made that suggestion because the OP does live in my area and we ship to all the regional garden centers of any size, so the chances are very good she could find what she wanted locally. Or have them order it - 'Moonlight' IS one we grow. I do realize many of you must rely on mail order, but Jennie and others in the PNW do not necessarily have to unless it something quite out of mainstream. And I don't know of any GC that sells 1G clems for as high a price as Joy Creek does :-)) Plus shipping costs!

Gardengal...Oh hon, I never meant for my post to sound like I was jumping on you...I just am so envious that you and the OP have local Nurseries that offer more than just what Miquel and I can get those Roseville 2 1/2 inch pots and very limited selection at that...at our Lowe's or Walmart...I guess we are destined to continue to pay extra to enjoy what yall can get locally for less...congrats to you...Jeanne

Ditto to what Jeanne said. No one is jumping on anyone. It is just that every year someone suggests buying locally and it's not possible for most of us. There are a lot of lurkers on here and anyone suggesting that all areas have access to great local nurseries (which we all probably do, but they don't sell clematis or if they do, they are the typical type II LFHs that are anything but my favorite) doesn't live in the boonies like most of us do. I agree that if you have access to local nurseries that carry what you want, buy them locally to support your nurseries. However depending on how local they are and the cost of gas today, I have no problems paying what anyone wants for shipping these days. I ordered one clematis from Joy Creek because it was one I wanted and my order totaled $32.98 which I gladly paid! Another order from Siskyou Rare Plant Nursery for a single pink pitcheri was $37.00, again something that I gladly paid because it was a plant I wanted and couldn't find anywhere else. Ugh, the price we pay for getting plants we want! LOL

If at first you don't succeed, try another nursery.

Silver Star generally has a good inventory this late in the spring.

I don't know what you're looking for (in fact noone has the two I 'm currently looking for...but then again I'm not ready to get any more until I know what survived the winter and what didn't), but Debbie has great plants and fair pricing.
