I bought one from Gail Austin last summer, sadly she isn't selling retail anymore. I haven't had it long enough to evaluate but I'm sure it isnt' a poor specimen.

I went to her garden three times and had time to talk with her quite a bit. She was aggressive in shovel pruning and not propagating or selling poor performers. Rooguchi and Violet Elizabeth are two I remember her mentioning that she got rid of. Rooguchi for constant mildew and Violet Elizabeth for poor performance.

Thanks! that is a great site! And I guess I'm really showing my ignorance here but, I don't know who Gail Austin is either. I'm new to OR and gardening is quite different here than in the midwest.

I just got one today from costco. They had very nice clematis plants.

Gail Austin had a mail order business selling Clematis, daylilies, Iris and other perennials. Her garden in Portland was also open often for retail sales and tours. She had hundreds of mature Clematis and thousands of daylilies, it was a display and test garden. She has retired and no longer is growing thousands of plants for sale and has scaled down her garden. I was lucky to visit several times last year, the Clems (about 15) I purchased from her were huge and very reasonably priced. I got a lot of ideas from her garden too. I got the link to her site from the daylily forum here on GW. I am so glad. I've never been to a private garden in a neighborhood in a city that was sooooo amazing.

She is going to be open several times this summer. I encourage anyone interested in Clematis in the Portland area to visit, the dates are on her site. Truly an amazing garden.
