Beautiful!

Clivias are cousins to hippeastrums (amaryllis). The buds form deep in the heart of the plant four to six months before they emerge. If conditions are favorable, the stalk will rise from between the leaves before the buds open. It is not unusual for the stalk to stay short the first time a clivia blooms. Things that can encourage the stalk to lengthen are using a fertilizer that has a higher ratio of potassium than phosphorous or nitrogen year around; a 6-8 week cold & dry spell in the fall; bright light and adequate watering in summer and when breaking dormancy in late winter; and a good genetic heritage. You can't do much about the last factor (except discarding the duds), but you can work on the others.
