It should come back. I had a pet rabbit that would do that. I would make a circle of chicken wire, (or something else like the wire that came on stucco paper that you use during construction,) and wrap it around the bottom of the vine. I sometimes would wrap chicken wire around the bottom of a tomato cage and put it over the plant.
