First of all, this is a really cool forum! I've always loved clematis, and after many years of renting I'm a home owner again and can't wait to start planting. But in the meantime...

While I was renting the last couple of years I bought a C. Piilu to grow in a container. Last fall we moved from Seattle to Colorado, and I brought the container and clematis with me. The problem is I donÂt think I can practically keep it in the container here  IÂm afraid it will get fried in the summer heat. I have creeping jenny well established in the container now, but will that be enough shade if I put the container in a position of direct sun? This guy only gets 4-5 ft tall, so I canÂt find a position for the container where the roots would be in the shade, but top in the sun. Does anyone else have any experience with clematis in container in hot climates? Am I correct in my assumptions?

So, if IÂm correct, IÂm thinking of transplanting it. ItÂs sprouting now, quite vigorously, so it looks like it survived the winter pretty well. (Although this blooms on old wood, so this will be a no bloom year as all the new growth sprouting from the ground.) But IÂm really stuck on exactly what to do with it, since itÂs not going to be a very big plant. Should I try it through a small shrub? Or just go for a small trellis in a west facing garden up against the garage? Any other advice for transplanting from the container to ground?
