Denise, living in Texas like Jeanne does, you all have a very long growing season. As a result, you can often get any given type III to rebloom after the initial bloom by pruning them back by half or so and keeping them well watered and fertilized.

Yup...Denise..Miguel is right..my Pruning group 3's are filling up with buds and some are beginning to open..after this bloom period is over I will hard prune again and give some 13-13-13 and let 'em grow back up and bloom again and do it again..I can usually get 3 bloom periods on the largest majority of mine..yall should see "Huldine" and "Mme. Julia Correvon"..OMG!! they are HUGE this year and tons of buds..come on baby they are paired with Climbing rosa "Red Eden" and "Eden" and both of them are full of buds too..yall might have to dial 911 the day they all open!!...Jeanne

Wow, Jeanne, you HAVE to post pictures when everything blooms. Sounds heavenly! What brand of 13-13-13 do you use? I've been using Mills Easy Feed, but forget the numbers. I'm also using Messenger Mighty Plant faithfully this year. AND I'm about to leap into the world of alfalfa tea. Can you sense my determination to make my garden grow this year??

On another note, Jeanne, I saw on the rose forum that you have a Picante climbing rose. I planted one this year, too. Does it grow pretty fast for you. And you said it's pretty disease resistant, too? I don't spray. It looks like a great rose!

I would imagine you can cut back the Texensis varieties after their first flush too, right?

Robert, I assume you mean Duchess of Albany, Princess Diana, Gravetye Beauty and the rest in that group? I have never tried cutting back Duchess of Albany and might want to give it a go just to see what happens. She blooms for me intermittently after her first big bloom cycle without having to do any pruning. Princess Diana and Gravetye Beauty have been wimps for me with few blooms at all so I would hesitate to cut them back since I wouldn't want them wasting energy putting out new foliage at the expense of the few flowers they do produce. If yours turn out to be more vigorous than mine, I would give it a try.

Texensis the species always puts out more blooms for me over the course of the summer with no prune back.

There might be some type IIIs that don't respond back to cutting back by putting out flowers as I have many that I have never cut back, but PPE has never done much when cut back. With all the variables involved, you don't have anything to lose trying it to see what will and won't in your own garden. Of course, the same is true for the type IIs.

Denise..Sounds like you have the bull by the horn this year for your gardens and I am sure if you keep up with your regime you'll see an amazing difference
Yes, I do have climbing rosa "Pinata" and while it didn't grow that much last year I attribute that to my lack of watering..I've got it placed in a raised bed and am being more vigilent about watering..it is also under the eaves which doesn't help with natural rainfall..
The 13-13-13 that I have is called "Pennington" all purpose fertilizer (Granules) that I bought a huge bag of it from Walmart...I will most assuredly post pics when those babies pop..it's gonna be stunning for sure...you'll hear my squealing out in my front garden from Coast to Coast...Jeanne

After reading your comments Miguel..it just dawned on me that the reason I've never tried hard pruning my "PPE" was because in previous years you said it didn't benefit like some 3's have..I am going to try and take pics and hard prune just to see if it will react any differently in my gardens this year..it's really grow alot!..Covering up my DA rosa "Cottage Rose"..I am so hoping they bloom together...Jeanne
