I would pinch out the tips.

let it grow at least two sets/nodes of mature leaves then pinch the tip. let it branch out and let these shoots grow two sets of mature leaves, then pinch again. this is in order to get a bushier vine.

when you plant it in the garden next spring, plant it a couple inches deeper (burying some nodes). it will root at those buried nodes and these also carry dormant buds, thereby creating a stronger plant.

ramona is type 2, it blooms on old wood for me in may (i'm same zone as you) and then has a smaller flush on new wood in late summer, august i believe. but for the first year don't expect much in the way of flowers.

once established and bushed out, you should not prune it except to remove dead wood and for shape. don't be deceived by the dead-looking wood in winter. it is not dead. don't prune until after you've seen green growth come out and can tell which stems are dead and which are not.

ramona was one of my first clematis. and she is prolific and newbie-friendly. here's a picture of her a couple years ago.

wow! that is beautiful! I can't wait until mine looks so great! And it's newbie-friendly, yippee!!!! I think I am going to try and keep it in a container for 2 years, and when our house is complete (we are building next summer) I will plant it there permanently. Hopefully it won't die next winter! Hmm, I guess I should do some searching about that too!
