Large spider

I noticed a large spider on my Bower Tangerine tree. He/she is about 3/4 of an inch long and shaped triangularly and looked like a small bat - color gray. He lives on the underside of the leaf and either folds the leaf or finds one already folded and hides in it. I know spiders eat other insects, so I left it on the tree. I do not see any signs of other insects on the tree, altho I am sure there are insects around since it is planted outside in the ground.

Anyone have any ideas on this critter? He does not appear to be eating the leaf.

    Hi,

Your message remindes me vaguely of the CBS evening news I watched few months ago. It reported that southwest has been infested with huge spider (possibly from Africa, sorry I don't extactly remember anymore) and will soon be seen all over in California. You may want to google on this story. I am not saying that this is exactly what you saw, but it sounds possible.

I remember when I was a boy I saw them everywhere in the garden and inside our house. They are very shy creatures. They appeared to be doing nothing to plants and sorroundings. So I let them alone also. It maybe and I suspect they are benificial to the environment. Unlike the ones I hear from the tarantula stories who are aggressive, crawl under your blanket while you are sleeping and bite you.

Thanks `nkt` for reminding me about google. I think I found my spider - It`s looks like a Bird Dropping Spider. I think I mislead some by using the word`large`. It is about 3/4 of an inch long. There are a few silky strands in his area, but no web per se. Benny - Since spiders eat other insects - I will leave him alone. I wish he would eat up my leaf miners!!!

That's nice Billy. I used to despise spiders but Millet and Joe told me that they are benificial so since then I leave them alone and help them if they are in danger.

I'd rid the spider and buy ladybugs..LOL..I fear spiders like you can't believe..good or bad they are all the same to me..
There was a show on satelite this wk..they call this spider a bird spider or something like that..this thing literally eats birds. It' disgusting..Has anyone seen this spider? I couldn't even watch the whole thing, I was getting goose bumps..Toni

My garden becomes a haven for spiders now. I am friendly with them and no matter what kind of spiders I see even black widow, I leave them alone. In a way they are benificial. If you leave them alone, they will leave you alone. All they want is food something they can eat and that's mostly insects that are not welcome in your garden.
