Still sleeping or dead?

I recently became addicted to clematis, and Chalk Hill's going-out-of-business sale last year sealed my ruination for good. Thrillingly, many of the vines I planted last fall have produced green leaves for me in recent weeks. However, five of my clems are showing no signs of life. They are: Peveril Pristine, Ascotiensis, Ozawa's Blue, Pastel Blue, and Kiev. They're all small plants, so what I'm looking for is shoots poking up through the soil. I'm hoping that they may just be on a later schedule than the rest. Can someone advise me on this?

All you can do is wait and see if they emerge. If they are in shady areas that could result in cooler soil which could be holding them back from emerging. If they were small plants to begin with, you should have potted them up in one gallon sized pots and grown them out before planting them in the garden.

Hi,
They can be still sleeping. I was very inpatient with my CH Clematis and dug up all that did not show up. Some of them have new growth that is too small to show up above the ground. I covered them back with dirt. In your zone they can sleep even longer.
1 of those I dug up was dead. Two of them did not show any signs of life. 5 or 6 are alive, but still under the ground.
