Greek oregano under fruit trees?

I'd like some beneficial ground cover under the fruit trees to eliminate the weed growth. And since my Greek oregano wilts badly in full sun in our summer heat, how would it do under our fruit trees? Since it loves to creep, and could be a problem in other areas of the garden, it might be good there in dappled sunlight. Also, what other herbs besides garlic would benefit the fruit trees? I would not be able to add compost to the fruit trees if I planted under them. Maybe this isn't a good idea?
