Hostas and fern fill this role well. Both are later to come up and fill out for the season. Annual Nicotianna is also very nice and will often reseed.

Your page doesnt say what area of NC you are in, but if you are near me (I'm just outside W-S) we could do some swapping of woodland plants. My woodland garden has Daffodils surrounded by Vinca Minor, and Helebore. I accidentally dropped a few cuttings of Wandering Jew (yes, the houseplant) and they rooted! They look fantastic growing up thru the Azaleas. I plan to ad Virginia Bluebells, ferns and white Bleeding Heart.
