Wow, what a beautiful clematis. I thought my Nelly was impressive, but yours is so much bigger. It is loaded with blooms.

it was planted there two years ago and i knew nothing about clematis. first year it grew well but little bloom. then last spring i pruned it to the ground before realizing you do not do that to this variety. so that year no blooms hardly; just regrowth.
so i was eager this year to see what it would really do- i lightly pruned the stems of deadness and couldn't believe that anything would regrow on those dead looking stems.
this is all new for me too this beautiful first flush- i think i am doing something right this year !

Yes it looks like you are doing everything right. Most clematis experts do recomend hard pruning even type 2's the first year or two to encourage branching. It looks like it worked like a charm for you.

I've never been that fond of Nelly when I've seen her for sale in nurseries, but blooming like this... beautiful!

i agree with you cohouser-in theory it is kind of a drab shade of pink,but i haven't seen a clematis that beautiful in forever. a very forgiving plant it is considering the ignorance i had for the first year or two...

You did right in hard pruning, you would not have had so many stems and flowers if you didn't. You were not ignorant!

Many of the pinks fade really badly in full sun. Something to consider for those who haven't planted their Nelly Mosers. I've got my Charissima and John Warren which are similar in partial shade and they hold their color better. I moved Hagley Hybrid to half sun too.
