Alina, been there done that several times myself. Purchased things from a local nursery that didn't end up being what they said it was. No idea on the identity other than to suggest it is more than likely a type II.

Ville de Lyon is a type III clematis that is very red. Unless the color is way off on my monitor, the OP's flowers look more purpley red to me but color is so subjective.

I wonder whether the color could depend on the soil acidity (like for Hydrangeas). I remember that people here mentioned that their 'Josephine's are lilac-colored. All 'Josephine's I saw in our nurseries are PINK. Not a trace of blue undertones.
This one opened reddish-purple and faded to mostly purple. Could it be 'Ville de Lyon' in our acid soil? Also, the first flower was semi-double.

My Josephine is pink. My Ville de Lyon is magenta.

I have the perfect solution. Dig it up pot it up but leave the tag at home. Then take her to the returns counter at Walmart for an exchange or your money back. I hear stories all the time from a friend of mine that works at a Walmart returns Dept. about folks that bring in things they bought from other stores or bought from them, used it all summer then returned it in the fall. Let your conscience be your guide? By the way didn't you have the same problem a few post ago and was going to return a clematis you had bought at either Lowes or Home Depot? Like I said before why do you buy a plant that's not blooming? There seems to be a pattern here?

Maybe Daniel Deronda? It's a violet blue semi-double with white anthers. It has a paler stripe down the middle and is a type 2. You can go to clematis on the web and do a search and see if you can find a photo that looks like your clematis. Karen

Karen, I tried to search on the COTW before I posted this question. The closest match I found was VdL (in terms of flower shape, anthers' color, petal count, etc.). Daniel looks different to me.
If anyone will be able to identify it, please let me know.

Doesn't look like Daniel Deronda to me either. The tepal color(although it might be an artifact of the picture taking process) and the overall tepal shape is more pointed than rounded on end like yours.

After you have purchased a few mislabeled ones, the need to know decreases significantly. The more important thing for me is whether it performs and how to prune it to get it to its maximum flowering.

I have heard some people postulate that soil pH could affect clematis blooms but never seen any info to corroborate it or disprove it.

OK, my ignore glasses are on... So far this baby is doing OK. It is blooming shortly after transplanting. I take it as a good sign.
Maybe, I will experiment with soil PH and Clematis color some day...

If you buy a plant that has had the tag switched accidently by another shopper and it's not in bloom. DON'T BUY IT!! I can hardly believe that your local nursery wouldn't exchange the plant because you did not save the pot. It sounds like to me your local nursery is tired of your antics! If it's a healthy robust plant be happy.

Not Daniel Deronda for sure. I have DD and the shape of the tepals is way off.

Thanks for your suggestion Jeanne. I just think that "Lady Betty Balfour" is too exotic for our nursery. I've never seen her for sale here. Also, it is suppose to bloom very late, right?

When my Miniseelik first opened, the centers weren't so pale. It is another short clem by the same breeder as Piilu.

I saw some labeled Piilu at Lowes last week (where I got Mini last year, in a distinctive pot, white with writing & pictures) and they looked more like Marmouri, another Kvistik clem.

Marie, I also bought this "Piilu" in that white pot with pictures and writing! Your 'Miniseelik' (meening miniskirt) looks just like my Clemmie! And pictures on COTW are very similar. If they came from the same vendor, maybe you answered my question. Our Lowe's does not sell them. I would love to get a true 'Piilu', 'Marmori', and other Kivistik hybrids. I only have 'Kullus' (did not bloom for me yet) and 'Ruutel' (blooming now, stunning!).
My only consern that it is supposed to be large late flowering group. Is it too early for such Clematis to bloom?

I bought mine in April 07 loaded with buds. The first bloom was in the last week in May. But she was like the Energizer Bunny, kept on going, and going, and going....

This year, she was a bit slower in breaking ground than the Piilu and Marmori I had bought the year before in similar sized pots. They are both taller & have many buds, but I think it will be a few weeks before they open up. I'm hoping the Piilu will have at least one double or semi double flower this year.

The ones in the stores were probably raised either further south or in a greenhouse. COTW has Marm & Mini starting in July, with P in April & May, with a possible late Summer bloom too.

Yes, the pictures on COTW look just like my Clematis. I bought it last fall, so it overwintered for me. Maybe, I should give it another year to get used to our climate... I'll keep in my mind that it could be 'Miniseelik' and see when it will bloom next year.
