In my opinion, if you really want a good first experience with clematis, either go to a nursery in your area and purchase one or mail order one from a reputable nursery. Attempting to start a clematis vine as your first foray into clematis growing will not be as satisfying as getting one that is already established and growing in a container.

I agree. I think the most important thing when establishing a new clem is its root mass. Last year I tried clematis, and though I adore a bargain, I bought mine from out garden center at full price. I really wanted some healthy roots.

I agree with them. Rooting the Clematis will take all season and next year you will still just have a little baby. Plus, from what I understand, not all of the cuttings will root, so you would need several cuttings to ensure getting a viable start.

One option to consider is buy an established Clematis at a nursery or garden center, and also take a cutting(s) from your neighbor. That way, you will have one that you can enjoy, and you will also have the baby to watch develop.

I just bought a well rooted, multi stemmed one gallon Clematis 'Bluebird' at Home Depot for ten bucks, regular price.

While I generally prefer to support local nurseries rather than big box stores, I just could not pass it up. my local nurseries usually charge between $15 and $20 for a gallon Clematis.

I'm sure you can find a similar price somewhere local and with a plant that is so much farther along than a cutting, you'll be much happier. Clems take at least three years to get established so starting from cuttings or tiny pots takes a ton of patience.
