Tammy..you are correct..clematis "Ville de Lyon" is a pruning group 3 and should be hard pruned as you did...I would wait and see if that stem is ok..usually new leaves will form on each side of the leaf axil..your "VdL" putting out new vines from the soil is an GREAT Sign for your clematis...it is obviously happy where you planted it..Jeanne
ps...if nothing green grows from that one vine later on just prune it evenly with the soil line

Ville de Lyon will die back to the ground and the new shoots are a very good sign. Once the temperatures are warmer, on a consistent basis, your clematis will really take off.

Thank you Jeanne and Janet for the feedback. I love this plant very much and am happy that it is doing well! I am going to buy some different varieties to cover more of the fence, they are so pretty!
