Clematis keeps dying

For 3 years now I have had my clematis come up in the spring beautifully. Then, right before it is about to bloom, it starts to die, from the ground up. Then it is dead for the rest of the year, until the next spring when it comes back. Why is it doing this? How can I fix it? I've tried miracle-gro, new mulch, watering, not watering. Nothing seems to stop it.

It is a common problem.
They tend to grow a lot of green growth that their root system can't support. They do grow out of it.

Cut off anything that looks dead. Then water and fertilize the crown of the plant and it should grow again. Use a slow release organic rather than Miracle Gro which will only fuel excess green growth.

Pinching them back early in the season can help too. You want multiple vines rather then one or two with a ton of growth on them.

Type III Viticellas tend to NOT do this but all the Large Flowering Hybrids tend TO do this.
