Mrs N. Thompson is one of the type twos, early large flowering. After I had one that did wilt like yours and even died from rootrot (but that my mistake in how I overwintered my clems before this year), I read somewhere that she was not one of the strongest growers.

Since yours made it through a Winter, she may put up more shoots from the root for a second bloom. Cut off the yukky part, feed & water well and pray.

I have heard that wilters can outgrow this condition in the third or fourth year.

I don't think the sun has that much to do with it, unless it dries out the soil too quickly. You can tell when they need water by sticking your finger into the soil about a half inch, I think. I haven't quite mastered this technique yet. If you see it looking a bit droopy, and it isn't too wet already, give it some more water.

I can't comment on the FS as it is a bit too cold here for me to try it yet, but I sure love the flowers. Others will be able to tell you more.

The sun isn't the problem. What you are describing is common. I believe it occurs from the top growth growing more than the roots can support. Cut off the bad parts. It should outgrow it.

All of my Type II's that are over three have outgrown wilting.
