Yes, Clematis require huge holes with amended soil.

I have learned the hard way that just plopping them into clay soil does not produce great results.

I agree about amending soil. I went through a lazy period and just plunked the clematis into the soil. They seem to take longer to get established and don't bloom as well.

These are all planted 'directly' in heavy clay soil.

No additives, no amendments .. nothing.

I don't fuss over them, I don't give them any special treatment at all.

I leave them alone and .. they do wonderfully!

I'm beginning to think that the more you mess around with 'any' plant the more risk you take in killing them.

I hate this clay stuff!

Being originally from Florida.. I was use to anything growing, year round no matter what!

The soil that we have here in Virginia seems to be all hard rock and clay.
