You don't have Multi Blue. Multi Blue can revert back to one of it's parents - The President.

Thanks Janet, I think this is exactly what happened here.
When I bought it as a young plant it had a puny little flower that was double. After that the blooms were only single and yes you are right they look exactly like those of The President. I thought that it was because the stems were killed to the ground during the cold winters.
But this year a big part of the stems survived so it's not the cause. I didn't know they can revert but it doesn't surprise me.

The reverting seemed strange to me when I first heard of it. After all, these are clematis, not hosta. lol

As long as we are on the subject, did you know there are also at least 2 types of Multi Blue? I accidentally ended up with both. I'll take pictures.

Both plants are considered Multi Blue. The colors are not showing accurate.

It is always double. I cannot remember single blooms even after hard pruning.

Here is mine. It's a good performer but I don't like the flowers as well as some posted here.

I actually like The President. My plant is very reliable and the blooms last a long time. The color blends nicely with lighter colored blues or purples, IMO.

I like it too.

Well, phooey, I guess I have two plants of The President, instead of one of each. Good thing I like it OK. Is there any chance it will re-revert?
