Dry buds on clematis

I have had a clematis planted in a pot for several years. This year the plant had a lot of buds but only one of them opened and it looked much smaller than usually and sort of sickish. I checked the other buds and all of them were dry. Does anybody know what the problem is? I searched the Internet but didn't find anything. I asked at the local garden center about the problem and they told me that it might be thrips, but when I opened the dry buds I didn't see any thrips.

How large is the pot? Did it dry out this spring? Is it in the original soil? It may need a larger pot, or new soil, more water or fertilizer. It may have gotten too wet, or the soil decomposed and the roots rotted. I guess it could be a lot of different things. What variety of clematis is it?

The pot is 12 inch diameter and 10 inch high. I re-potted it last fall. The plant itself (leaves) look o.k. I have another clematis (The President) in same size pot and that one did just fine, it had a lot of blooms. The problem clematis is Will Goodwin. The pot is made from plastic and it is in another decorative pot. Today I took the clematis out of the decorative pot and I saw two slugs. Could that be a problem somehow?
