Dwarf Nandina

I have about 15 dwarf nandina planted about 6 or 7 years old. They are beginning to look terrible. They are spliting, some are dying, and they are getting too big. What do I do? Can I prune them back? I have one that is almost dead, only about 1/4 of it living the rest of the plant looks dead. I would be willing to pull them all up and plant something else. I need something that will not get any taller than 3 ft high. Some of them will planted on the southside of my house and some on the west side. Full sun on the southside. I really would like low maintance because I'm getting OLD and don't feel like a lot of maintance. All Suggestions welcomed. HELP ME
