Chills, I have always planted all my clematis regardless of type deeper in the ground than they were in their pots and had no issues doing so.

Don't grow serratifolia but COTW claims it can get to be 4 to 5 meters tall which equals 13 to 16 or so feet tall.

I thought it would be 4-5 feet tall, I actually was looking for Helios originally as I wanted a yellow. The serratifoila has 12 stems coming out of its 1/2 gal container. Looks like its primed and ready to take off.

I'm tempted to put it where my Sweet Autumn previously was, though I did move a SAC seedling (one of only 2 I have had in 5 years) there a few weeks ago. Originally I was going to grow it climbing onto a contorted hazel, but if its going to be that big that will not be an option (the hazel is maybe four feet tall).

something tells me I am going to have to think long and hard about where to put this one. (I'm out of room....)

Nckvilledudes, are you growing heraclifolia, this was the one I was most concerned about planting deeply as it likely has a different kind of crown than a vining clematis.

Chills, I have two heracleifolia plants that I got from White Flower Farms years ago as well as two plants that I started from seed this past fall. I also have two heracleifolia plants that I am trialing for someone. All were planted deeper in the ground than they were in their original pots. For the ones started from seed, as soon as I pricked them out of the seed starting pots, they were transplanted into pots and buried deeper in the new pots than they were in the original pots. Each time I have moved them up in pots sizewise I have repeated the deeper planting.
