Many years ago (probably 7) I planted what I seem to recall as jackmaani clematis. For several years I did not see hide nor hair of it. As a result, i took down the trellis behind it. In the last two years it has returned in force. So, I've jerry rigged wires and staples and ties and anything elce I can think of to keep it on my fence. It is a beautiful plant and huge. I want to put it on a proper trellis, but I'm not sure how.. I'd like to cut it back completely so that I can install a proper trellis, but when. I tried this spring, but it was already so heavy that I wasn't super effective. I was afraid to prune it for fear of losing blooms. Any ideas on when best to handle this, and how. I think trimming it to the ground would be the best to get the trellis in. What do you guys think?
