Overwintering

I am planning to overwinter my large Brugs in a large wooden garden shed. It is not insulated but I will be leaving a small thermostatically controlled heater in with the Brugs. Will this be enough to get them through the Winter? It can get pretty cold up here.

I would think that it will very cold, and your heater will be running constantly most of the winter. Expect a HIGH electric bill.

Even my insulated garage ( also in zone 5 Ontario near Guelph ) is too cold, although I have never put a heater into it.

You might try wrapping them each with an old sheet and figuring a way to trap the heat inside the sheet, but even that is a risk.

I packed as many as I could into my insulated cold cellar, and they seem to make it okay, although in the really cold days, I open the door a bit to let some of the house heat into the room,... and my gas bill goes up.

thistle. Do you have a back up plan?? How about a couple heaters and a thermo thingy that tells you what the temp is from the comforts of your home? How about wraping them in bubble wrap or an old blanket? But again we have left them outside in a ditch and to our surprise they have some back from the roots.

Thank you Jroot and Karmahappytoes for your responses about overwintering. It looks like Frost last night has made my decision a lot easier.
I have now decided to make space in an unused bedroom and keep them there over the Winter. Not an ideal situation but a necessary one I think.I'm in trouble if I get a lot of company at Christmas lol.
Nature has made it easier to remove all the leaves since they were black anyway.I did all my cuttings today so I should be in good shape for Spring.

GOOD JOB!!! Nothing like making a decision when you don't have a choice....LOL I'm sure your company will understand.. Most folks when they come here just expect to "work around it"...

    Welcome, fastmario!

    Your English is perfectly understandable.

Do you have any photos of your brugs to share with us?

fastmario, welcome and are these new babies?

thistle, wise move as I'm hearing a lot of folks are having to start over due to losses in the winter months. Always good to have a back up plan!

chena, I had a good laugh! I will say it's not the same here and when the relative showed up for the holiday and there was no tree, just christmas lights on some cut up limbs in pots well let's just say we haven't had a family gathering in several years! LOL

That is funny. I too had christmas lights and no tree. They were on a plumeria, lol. We used to live in an apartment. It had a patio but every winter I would have to fill the living room and bedrooms with plants. Everyone got used to climbing over a plant to get in the bed.

KHT that's too funny. I can just picture a bucket of cuttings with lights. lol

Oh no karyn1 these were huge potted ones that circled the tv set and we hung lights all over the stumps. What is more fun is the landscapers that stop in the spring with the pots go back out!!

fool4flowers, I hear ya!! I'm awaiting for the family to come home and find that the tropicals had to come inside.
I spent a day out in the brug house stacking pots and still not enough room for those that were at the front door. Now you can see the front door, I'm making progress!

I haven't even started bringing things in yet. I was bugging my husband again this evening to help me make more beds and he said I didn't need them til next spring. Then I said well about half of whats on the patio and in the front yard in pots could be in the ground but since I don't have any room left they are all coming in the house. Then I showed him some pics on the forum of huge brugs in full bloom and he decided I need much bigger beds, lol.

I just brought my two large ones in for the winter, all trimmed. They stay in 50 degree rooms and little water and do fine.
