Layered clem has rooted and doing well...

Last fall I layered my clematis in the flower beds and found it sprouting tiny new leaf buds this spring. About 3 weeks to a month ago I disconnected it from the parent. It didn't do much of anything for a while and now it is starting to put on top growth very nicely but it only has one stem. Should I now dig it up and repot it deeper up the stem? Should I pot it up all the way to the new top growth? What are your thoughts? Will this encourage more coming up from the roots?

Tracy...pot it up and remember to keep pinching out the tops leaving maybe a couple sets of leaves..this will allow your new baby to focus on getting a stronger root system and not try to grow vines...I would sink the pot into my garden and keep moist..check it this fall and if the roots are coming outta the bottom..it's ready to go..don't forget to put some bone meal in the pot ....Jeanne

Jeanne, thank you for the help. How deeply should I plant it on the stem? There is about 4-5" of wood before the two leafed out portions. I will pinch the top growth out and sink the pot to dig up in the fall.
