Carolina Gardening

Apples in Zone 8

I live down in Duplin County, (zone 8, sandy soil) and I wonder if any one has experience with "Ginger Gold" or "Grimes Golden" apple trees in this zone. I have found widely varying information on which zones are appropriate for these trees.

Anna, I am not far from you in Durham County. I have sandy-loam-clay soil. I have about 20 heirloom varieties growing in my apple orchard. Grimes Golden is one of them. It is doing just fine. I expect my first crop of apples next year. I wish I had known about Lee Calhoun's tour. I have talked to him several times on the phone. I would love to have seen his orchard. Maybe the next time he opens it...
