I've just received 2 new clematis, launched by Evison last week at Hampton Court Flower Show. Don't call it bragging, pl.

Beautiful...but I don't think that first one is "Amethyst Beauty"..the colour of the tepals and anthers look all wrong..Jeanne

Jeanne, I noticed the difference between the flowers and the picture on the tag, but put the blame on the digital cameras. After waiting for so long and paying the very special price it's hard to accept the obvious

It's still so beautiful!!..You are so fortunate that you can acquire his newest variety of clematis so soon after conception! We, in America must usually wait for years to buy them...Jeanne

It may still turn out to be Amethyst Beauty. The linked description says it starts out red-purple and matures to blue-purple. Since the clem is new, you may be seeing the "mature" flower. You may find on later blooms (as the whole plant matures) that the blooms do start out more reddish-purple.

I'd be interested in seeing a later report.

I have seen big differences in those Evison tags and the actual blooms in nurseries here locally. I think the tags are off, not the plants.

Congrats on your new plants. :)

The clematis is a beauty, amethyst or not. I sent the picture to Taylor Nursery and wait for their answer.
Jeanne, here in BG we have a small, but well-organized forum. Always on a look out for interesting clematis. To get a discount and minimize the delivery cost we order collectively. From UK, Germany, Poland

"I have seen big differences in those Evison tags and the actual blooms in nurseries here locally. I think the tags are off, not the plants."

My experience is limited, with only one good mature plant, but my Evison fades like crazy, to the point when the only time you can see its true color is the first day it opens. Exceptionally vigorous plant, though. Just got my second Evison this year, so we'll see how it turns out.

Taylor Clematis changed the picture of Amethyst Beauty on their cataloque. The new one looks much more like what I have.

It's nice, but I would be disappointed. The red one on the tag is stunning. Have you figured out the name of the red one?

I think the printer just did the colors wrong on the tags. I don't think the OP has the wrong Clematis.

Rebecca is the same way. The photos on the tags are tomato red and while she is very red she isn't orange red but blue red. I've seen her in flower with the same blue tags as in this thread.

Or we can blame Evison's camera since it is his photo on COTW and the exact same photo on the tag.....

You can see the same blue Evison tag with the same redder Clematis on it in the pictures from Taylor's. The pots are blue too when I've seen them locally and the nurseries are charging more than other Clematis.

The photo on the tag originated from Evison - it's still on his catalogue, on Thorncrof Nursery's and COTW.

I say Evison's camera/editing isn't necessarily true to life color.

holy cow look at this one!

I have three of Raymond Evison's lovely Clematis. Galore, Avante Guard both Vitacella varieties. My latest is Arctic Queen which I am absolutely in love with. It just finished a flush of blooms, and it growning and adding more buds.
I bought another for a firend as a birthday gift. It was the only one they had left and had been Sun scorched to the point, that only a few leaves were left green. I cut it back, and gave it some organic fertilizer in hopes of getting some additional growth. I sure hopes it lives. At least I got them to cut the price in half.

I have Avante Garde, Arctic Queen, Cezanne, Josephine, Petite Faucon, Crystal Fountain, Bijou, Gazelle, and Harlow Carr.

This is the e-mail Taylor Clematis sent to a lady from the bulgarian forum about Amethyst Beauty:

    Hi,
Just to keep you informed i have asked Raymond evison for his answer, however i think it is just his photo that is not very good,

    Here is my photo

    from now,

    Cheers,

I would love to hear how Mr. Evison explains the discrepancy.
