Jackmanii on the front porch....

Is now blooming. This thing is enormous, easily reaching our 10 foot eaves in only its second summer. I planted this Jackmanii late in the summer of '06. It grew about 6-7 feet tall last summer, and this summer has easily hit 10' foot. I had to hang more mesh on the side of the house, above what I installed last year because this thing grew so big so fast. It probably would have reached 12' had I had the mesh in place before hand.

A bit closer look and you can still see plenty of blooms still haven't opened yet either. :>)

The reason I didn't have more mesh installed initially is because this clematis was supposed to be a Mrs. Charmondeley, not a Jackmanii. I ordered the two plants online and must have mixed up their tags before planting. Ended up having the Jackmanii sprouting up where I thought I had a Mrs. C, and vice versa. Oh well!

Next spring, I plan to add some more mesh to cover the metal pipe so you won't be able to see it. Jackmanii should have no trouble hiding it next summer.

It's beautiful. The dark flowers look so nice against your light colored house. I love mine also. We had a long cold spring so my clematis are a month behind, so my Jackmanii hasn't started blooming yet. It is a nice variety. I can understand why it has been a favorite for 150 years!

I'm surprised that it bloomed so well considering where it is planted. This is the north-east facing corner of the house so it gets the least amount of sun in our yard. It only gets sun till about 1-2 in the afternoon, the rest of the time it is shaded by the house.

There is also a Zephirine Drouhine climbing rose planted along side the Jackmanii. You can sorta make it out in the first pic, it is climbing up right next to the corner post of the porch. Because Zephy isn't very cold hardy for me, it dies back to the ground each winter so it is slow to get going and doesn't bloom for me until mid july or so, after Jackmanii is done with it's first flush. The zephy rose also blooms pretty reliably for me in this part shade location albeit a bit later, and smells heavenly too.

That is just beautiful against your house. It seems to draw the foundation plants right into the house and softens the corner too. Very effective. Is the siding light grey or white?

The siding is light grey, underside of the eaves and porch railing are white.
