torn down vines will resprout,no? this year , no??

- I must brace myself for what I now have to write down & let me tell you, it is excruciating, my hope is the the reward is going to be advice that can help..

I moved in the midst of december & spent a entire weekend devoted to get my clematis/fern/peony/phloxes collection with me.

Everything but the clematis has bounced back, knowing the clemmies sometimes take a sleep year I am not too alarmed albeit disapointed, The 7 clemmies that did take off, 5 of were in full bud up until Sunday night when my, godforgive me- super ditzy DUMB frail old aunt upstairs pulls it ALL OUT INSISTING IT WAS ALL CHOKERS.

Now dont take me wrong, she is nice old lady but I have wished every living malady on her since early yesterday morning when I traipsed out to do my daily training in to the rose hedge. it is ALL GONEall vines are torn out of the ground & upon closer inspection I even see the bloody crown up on the surface, with bits of loose roots floating around in the mulch.

Now let me tell you before you decide I am a complete psycho.

I took sweet old auntie BY THE WRIST the 3rd & last time I showed her what hubby & I had been up to the last 2 weekends when ever single plant was hedged OFF WITH GREEN 2FT FENCE as to make sure the dog stays out of the vine tangle.

There are 2, TWO tags, one that came from the nursery & 1 large white handwritten in place right in front the root clump.

I am bawling my head off, again , in fact I havent stopped since monday morning, I am taking this so hard I can barely get out of the bed let alone walk the dog. I worked so hard for this

To make matters worse, about a month and a half ago she tossed out my japanese 15 BLOODY YEARS OLD extremely slowgrowing hydrangea. It was the only plant that went straight in the ground back in decemeber & was already up & coming, she says it was DEAD.

I only got buds on it last year.. BOOOOO!!!!!!

sniffle,

Now I went out & got a hold of her & no matter what as of course I cant really start yelling at her, she insist it was just chokers- meaning morning glory & weeds, SOB!

really, I am so sorry for any offence taken but is really just me who can see the magnitude of this?

well my husband does, as he is going without dinner & he is not a gardener one bit..

I am really struggling with writing this as it is killing me all over, I cant set my foot out in the back with out falling apart completely, there were over 100 buds on the white Huldine, the climbing rose hedge is light pink doubles, The Piluu Had a bud count of almost 50 pinwheel striped little loved flower buds, the multiblue that I have had a grand total of 4 buds last year came up with over 20 of them. , Mind you, this is only the first blooming cycle of the season.. I have had each & every one of them for OVER 6 years now, dragging them from rental apartment to rental, allowing them to amass, seeing to them every day for the last 5 years.

Anybody crying with me yet?

As it settles I start seething, what else am I supposed to do?

WHY do I have to beg people to pay attention to what I am asking them NOT TO DO?

I cant help but thinking there is some passive aggressive message in there but I dont think so, we get along great although she's hubby aunt, she is a very sweet old lady, when she wants to, & I guess she is the complete opposite of that when she wants to...

Golly,

No matter what, I am stumped & need some substantial advice,

Can I dig them up & start over in a bed far away from her, ~which sadly means I never am going to see them bloom from my kitchen..

HOW do I deal with people like this?

I am thinking i should simply go & tear out the damn sunflowers that are growing willy nilly due to bird seeders to make things even, maybe she wont understand my swedish accent but surely shell get that.

well, you see, that does not work either for I am simply not that person, I don't like harming anything living certainly not the poor sunflowers.

To make matters worse, we had agreed upon the beds I could use for planting, it was all sanctioned by HER already. It is her house I would not dream of going against her wishes in any regard.

One things for certain, I must adress this NOW, once it for all, it can never happen again & let me tel you this for a fact, a peony is not going to stand for that treatment.

I think I need to find a valium or such..

COWMANURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please, I need to be talked down for I am on a mental ledge & my husband just dont get it, a plant is a plant is a plant for him & in fact he sticks me 10$, starts shooing me, there there, go off & buy yourself a new plant my dear.

The dummy do not get the 5 years of devoted that just went down the toilet, not to mention they are all CHALK HILL Clemmies..

10$.. Pha!

I told him I am deducting 500$ off next ,months rent & he looked like he was about to faint.

( he himself has a long rich history of killing my most precious plants & although I was upset, I never gave him too hard of a time about it, like the cactus I inherited, a 50 year old cactus he tears OFF the wall by swinging the dogleash rel carelessly, well He did go in to Gethsemane & looked at the prices, Over 400 $.. his defence? well I never paid for it in the first place did I?

GGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

I must stop beofre I go beserk..

I put my faith on you, dear fellow gardeners, can ye hear my pain?

Yes, I feel your pain and I'm afraid Auntie would feel it as well if it had been my plants she ripped out.

I don't know what to tell you. I don't know how anyone could mistake Clematis covered with buds for weeds. Especially if they were fenced off and clearly valued as yours were.

It must have taken her quite a bit of time and effort, I can't imagine why she would do this....

Take deep breaths and relax. Perhaps your auntie is succumbing to Alzheimers or some other form of dementia. I understand your frustration with what happened but plants can be replaced. I think I would replant them somewhere Auntie can not get to them or you might risk the same thing happening again. Perhaps Auntie needs to have a physical exam to find out if something is going on with her.

    Hallo,
Thanks for the replies, I am just as devastated however, sure I can buy new plants, what I cant get back is all the effort.
& in regards of sweet old auntie, she is healthy as a springchick, if only..
You see it is for me easier to forgive if shed only said, oh I am sorry I did not realize but to just shrug her shoulders as if she tossed out the compost as garbage~ which also by the way would make very irritated.-
Thereof my question about some passive agressive gesture.....?
In any case, it wont do that she behaves like this, it must be dealt with but I was in fact raised in very strict terms when it comes to our elders, I cant concieve how I can insist on the importance of her actions as it would give me a massive panicattack. in fact I am cringing just thinking about it,
Besides, Nickvilledudes, you were instrumental in helping me when I first started out with the species, is the fact that your yard is CRAMMED with upteenth FAB clemmies allowing you to be the fat cat here? I know how long you have been doing this
OF COURSE I KNOW I can buy new ones.

That does not help one lousy bit I am afraid, actually, it feels like somebody put a wet stripe of leather around my troath~ should I say heart?~ & I am stuck in the sun as the strip slowly shrinks as it dries up. No offense but howabout some advice I could actually make use of?
What do you think about me getting some blooms at all this season?
with damaged rottball & all? Can you, oh wise one, think anything I can do to speed up recovery?
My gardeningbuddy who's done this these past 20-25 years stopped by to help me with the faucet & I had to send him home as I cant set my foot out in the yard.
He left green in the face, saying that my clematises makes him sick to his stomach. He is normally of the same consitution as your advice actually, relax it will come back type of thing, not today thou...
Especially as the hedge of roses is ablaze in buds.
there SHOULD have been clemmies in there.
My apologies for the sorry state of this posting
Oh I forgot, her reason for doing this?
They were CHOKING the rosebush!!!!!!! %^$$%#%#$@$%R*&Y*()!
cowmanure!! arrggh, gawd I am going to have a heartfailure.
In my opinion, MY summer ended yesterday. NO KIDDING.
    Kerstin.

Kerstin..I feel your pain hon..I know, I've suffered through the sleep, creep year, doing all the nurturing, fertilizing, and pruning my clematis at my new home and finally enjoying my clematis Leap year this year...I had one get yanked up and it broke my heart..It's even more upsetting when people don't understand how those years dedicated to getting your clematis to finally grow beautifully only to have it ruined can devastate you...I hope you find a solution..If she couldn't even say she's sorry then obviously she could have cared less or maybe she is getting Dementia..I wished I could say something to make it all better...I'd be so po-ed that I'd spend a sinful amount on clematis and replace them all plus some!!..When you know who doesn't "get it"..I show him with his pocketbook..works everytime..LOL...Jeanne

I can't even imagine your pain. I lost a young, l cane montana to a rabbit once and was livid, but it's a dumb animal, after all. I'm really hoping that you might get another bloom period out of some of them if you water them well now, but I don't really know, not having this happen to me. If you live in a place with a long growing season, you'd probably be more likely to get lucky. I'm more focused on what you can do to prevent it in the future, and I'm wondering if you need to protect them even more. What if you got some metal mesh material (like chicken wire or hardware cloth), and made a loose cage around the stems? Would that be enough to signal that they're valuable plants to you? Are the climbing roses thorny enough that she wouldn't reach inside to pull out the clemmies? How about some sort of decorative sign that says "Please don't pull this up", or "Stay away", or "Not a Weed". How about planting a smaller, thorny rose in front of the clemmie so that pulling it up would entail getting scratched? How about metal mesh flat on the ground and pegged down so that the stems came up through the holes, but pulling the whole rootball out would be a lot more work?
I also would be wondering about a little passive-aggressive thing going on here, unless she is losing it, but there's not a whole lot you can do about that, I don't think. I'm really sorry, if that helps at all.
