very few real reds, more on the maroonish side if they are marked "red", but I guess a few of the texensis types can be really red.

COTW will give you some pictures if you put in pink or red in the search, and if you see something you like you can ask us if we have it & how it compares to the picture.

Barbara Harrington is hot pink so is Princess Diana, I have them both blooming now. Ville de Lyon is too.

Niobe, Rouge Cardinal and others called red are all very purple to me.

I like all of them but Princess Diana best. Can you tell me please BuyorSell if the picture on COTW linked below is accurate to the actual color of the bloom?

I want to plant this on a support for a willow tree and was feeling a hot pink would stand out best against the limey green of the willow.

Interesting that VdeL shows as a strong/hot pink on COTW and looked similarly on the tag at the nursery but when I went back to see it actually in bloom, it was a deep wine purple. Hmmm - mis-tagged perhaps??

Duchess of Albany is supposedly more vigorous than Princess Diana, and similar appearance. Perhaps others can verify if that is true.

The color is pretty accurate Holly BC. Duchess of Albany is definitely more floriferous than Princess Diana in my garden. It is also a lot more resistant to mildew than Princess Diana, however Princess Diana is more pink than the Duchess.

Personally I don't think of either of them as hot pink.

Allanah is more of a fuschia colored if that is what you are looking for.

OrwellianQ TYVM for the great pics. Your picture of Allanah makes me want to add it to the list but COTW describes it (and the photo 'appears' to confirm) as ruby red with cardinal red. In your pic it doesn't look at all red but - as you described - fuschia pink. However as you are growing it thus can see it before your eyes, I'm inclined to take your word for it. :-)) Looking at pictures on the web of anything - colorwise - is always a challenge. It's great to have folks who can confirm color realities.

Perhaps I could plant two. How closely could one plant clematis? The only thing competing for soil room would be the grass and some willow roots. The main trunk of the willow is 7 to 8' away from the support post I want the train the clematis up.

Holly the picture I posted of Allanah is about as true to color as you can get--at least its color in my garden. I originally purchased it from Chalk Hill and purchased it because the picture being used on their website at the time showed it to be a true red. They have since changed the picture to one that looks more like what my picture looks like.

You can plant clematis as close as you want. Some people will say you need several feet between clematis. On one of my trellises that is ten feet long, I have 10 different clematis planted. Planting this closely allows me to pack as many in as I can, allows me to use soaker hoses to keep them watered, and so far, nothing is suffering. Just realize that willows are another tree that are notorious for sucking up water so be prepared to give whatever clematis you plant copious amounts of water to compensate for what might be sucked up by the willow.

TY for the 'color assurance' Q. I think I'll try to find Allanah herebouts. :-)) Yes I will keep an eye on the water situation. This willow is about 20 years old so imagine the roots run far and deep.

Here are a couple of pictures from last year of Duchess of Albany, her first year. She's just starting to open up now here in my zone 5 backyard and looks like there will be a lot more blooms. She is blooming along the top of the fence but has also crossed over Blue Angel a few feet away down the fence and is growing into the base of a nearby shrub about 6 inches above the ground. Can't exactly figure out how to get her untangled. LOL. Anyway the color looks very much the same as Miguel's pix.

Brandy, here is a closer up view of Avant Garde. The color changes as the flower ages and then the sepals fall off leaving the pink frillies in the center.

Others to consider would be C. texensis. The color of the flower will vary depending on whom you purchase it from but it is a beauty nonetheless.

Another one that is more burgundy red is Gravetye Beauty. I almost hesistate to recommend her because she and her relatives, Etoile Rose and Princess Dianna are mildew magnets in my garden, but nonetheless will throw her in here.

What member of the family of clematis is Avant Garde? I am looking for clems that are not prone to wilt. I'v had a lot of wilt last year from my large flowered clems. My viticella's did great and are doing great this year. I can purchase Avant Garde here locally. So, before I make the purchase I wanted to ask the "wilt" question.

Avant Garde is a type III hard prune. I believe it is a sport from a Viticella, 'KermesinaÂ

BorS is correct about its pruning class and it being a sport of Kermesina. Haven't had any problems with wilt on this one yet.
