Brug ID please......

Hello,

I grew this Brug from seed and it turned out to be a real beauty. I kinda recall the lable on the mother plant saying it was a dwarf type. I figured it would be yellow like the mother plant, but somehow failed to record the name of the plant. Any ideas?

It smells REALLllllllllll good, more like an easter lilly than a brug.

Thanks

Tony

Tony, I think this is Datura instead of Brugmansia. Very pretty flower though!

    Wildflower,

OOoopps! I have no idea, as you can tell. You are probably correct. When I saw the blossoms starting to form, they do look like the brugs I have, except these open upright instead of droop down.

PLUS, I have never seen seed pods on the brugs before.

    I feel sooo stoooopid now.

    Thanks
    Tony

Tony, you aren't stoooopid, this is a common mistake that we see all the time. That wone is the Datura metel var chlorantha but it depends on where your buy the seeds it can be called many names form Double Golden Queen to Ballerina Yellow.

I agree! You shouldn't feel stupid. I think a lot of times the common name "angel trumpet" confuses people. It's a beautiful flower and if I was you, I'd save the seeds. The only datura I've ever grown was a really ugly (to me) single purple so I never tried them again. Your's is beautiful though, and very worth saving especially with the scent you describe!

I get seed pods on my brugmansia here every year, by our growing season isn't long enough for them to mature. The pods on the brugs sort of remind me of a green bean, whereas on the datura they look more like a sweet-gum ball.

    Thanks everyone,

I was in the area today where I got the seeds from. I didnt buy them they were all over the ground from exploding seed pods.

I went back to the scene of the crime and noted the name is Angel's Trumpet. This name is soooo brugmansia sounding I figured it had to be.

The owner of the place was there and he said that the plant lasts typically 2 yrs before most folks yank em out and let seedlings replace it naturally. He said after approx 2 yrs they simply get woody/knarly and just plain unattractive. He gave me a handfull of seeds to show me what they look like !

Anyways, I now need to research what makes this plant thrive. Hot, cold, wet or dry etc etc.

I have one in a pot on the screened pool deck which looks to be weeks ahead of one I placed in the ground.

Its always fun to start plants this way but even a larger treat when they look this good and smell great all from such a short healthy plant.

Thanks again for all the info, you guys were right on the money

    Tony
