Not sure exactly what you are referring to but most of the tangutica and tangutica hybrids have seedheads that sound like your description. Go to COTW via the link below and search for tangutica in the clematis name includes area. Those listings with a + have pictures and most of those have shots of the seedheads.

I checked out pictures of tangutica type clematis on COTW and their seedheads were open; not what I was looking for. The one I saw was rounded and closed; just like a little ball. They were stunning! Actually it is grown in the yard of Paul Newman's daughter, Clea, in Fairfield, CT. I would love to ask her the name the next time I am at my friend's beach house if I see her or her DH. The seedheads were so neat looking I would never cut them off. Anybody know what I am talking about?

The one I am looking for didn't have as many strands (for lack of the correct name) and they didn't all go in the same direction. They kind of went like a grapevine ball. THIS IS DRIVING ME CRAZY. I appreciate all the help and hopefully someone will know what the hell I am talking about. Honestly, I saw this seedhead!!! LOL With all our clematis freaks growing hundreds of clems, someone must have seen a seedpod like I described.

Hi All-

Karen from Garden Buddies suggested Nelly Moser and she nailed it from the picture of the seed head on COTW. Would Nelly be blooming in my zone 6 right about now because I have noticed an awful lot of clemmies that look like her around in my travels.

I need to get Nelly next! I still haven't seen a bud or bloom on P.S. or DoA or any of my clems actually. I still keep hoping and trying.

Sue just realize that there are probably many clematis that look like what you describe. I don't think that only one cultivar of clematis is going to exclusively have seedheads that look like you describe. I would imagine that there are probably quite a few type IIs that have similar seedheads.

I believe you are so right. If both Nelly Moser and Guernsey Cream have seed pods that look like what I was describing then maybe a lot of type IIs are similar.
