Will ground cover harm my clematis?

13 years ago

I have 3 clematis that grow beautifully on the fence that borders my driveway. Between the driveway and the fence there is a 4" strip of dirt where would like to plant a ground cover. Will a matting ground cover like pratia harm my clematis in any way or prevent it from coming up next year?
