Is it too late to prune clematis?

Hello there, I live in zone 2b and have eight new clematis (type II & III) that I planted late last summer. We have had a very late and cold spring and some of them are just coming up while a few are quite big (3 feet tall and a few vines).

I read that type II and III clematis should be pruned back hard the first year in the spring. Some of the clems have buds on them, flowers about to bloom. Should I cut these right back, or is it too late? What type of care do these clematis need?

No you don't have to prune your pruning group 2's right now..Enjoy those blooms and after it is over blooming then you can prune to induce more vines to emerge from the soil..hopefully..you have already hard pruned your pruning group 3's as they will bloom later on in the season on the new vines they produce...Jeanne

Wow! I didn't know that you could grow clematis in colder zones.I'm in 2-3,and would love to grow some.Please tell me which ones do well.Thanks, Judy

You might have to go to the Canadian forums or the Northern Gardening forum and do a search on clematis.
