My hagley hybrid did the same thing this year on one bloom. I wonder what causes it to do that.

Typically unusual weather can cause clematis to have less than normal blooms. However, I think it is quite appealing looking.

My Dr Ruppel did something like this last year. Not as attractive as yours though. I did not see normal blooms on it since that time. Hope this year it will be OK.

Alina, your picture shows what is more typical from exposure to cold temps during bud formation. I have seen the same thing many times over on lots of clematis in my garden.

This is really interesting to know. The picture was taken last fall, after a hot summer. So, maybe other factors can cause the same effect.

I should add that Violet Elizabeth's color isn't that rich.

Alina, I got weird blooms last summer also but it was typically weird colored blooms and not green in the sepals. Clematis often surprise us with what they do!

Last year was the first year of growing Clematis for me. I was scared to see this kind of blooms on my plant, I thought it is a virus. Thanks to people from this forum for their advices and explanations!

I think I must be a really odd bird because I think that it is kind of cool looking. :-)I haven't seen anything like that before.
