I love the color of your brick
I'd pick a reddish plum color like that's a cross between your reddish plant and your gorgeous brick. I'd grab samples from the paint store and look that that plant and brick and get a blend betwen the two. Renee Kent,

What about a terracotta color to match the brick on either side. It's a very pleasant color and goes with just about everything I think. :)

I vote turquoise to pick up the blue in the yucca and the rocks. But I'm obsessed with turquoise right now.

i like the idea of a darkish french blue. more classic then turquoise which i'm afraid will be out of style within a year or so... but the plum idea is also really interesting, more surprising

All great suggestions! I love the deep eggplant suggestion...but honestly, I've been so inclined to use aqua or turquoise. I want a great splash of color, but I'm rather conservative too so I haven't been able to make myself buy the turquoise.

If it makes a difference, my entry is painted burnt orange (UT color) and I accent throughout my dining room and living room with turquoise. Soooo, I think I'm getting closer!!!! Thank you so much.

I think a strong nautical blue would look fantastic. It would provide lovely contrast with your grey siding, white trim, warm reddish bricks and plantings, as well as the green plants.

When I'm in a paint colour quandry, I paint samples on cardboard, tape them up & stand back. The best option usually presents itself pretty clearly, but if you still can't decide it probably means that they will all work.

Your courtyard is lovely. Good luck making it even nicer.

Sarah, plum (eggplant) is still a top contender, but I'll have to check out the dark french blue. Have you found it on any particular site?

I just painted mine Peacock Tail which is Behr brand at Home Depot. I LOVE IT.

Don't go too dark, since you door is recessed.

I like newburyport blue HC-155 by Benjamin Moore or stratton blue HC-142 which reads green.

Another thought, is to your plantings. I think the hedges lining the walkway further constrict the area. How about some plants of different heights, color and texture? You could also add some colorful pottery in the area to really make a statement. See:

Do like your choice - was skeptical of the blue family in your first questions but did indeed like the dark royal blue - now that you've chosen the eggplant one can see how helpful this discussion page can be to give suggestions and best- give confidence about decisions - it would be fun to see door finished!

Love the Eggplant! I once painted my house a warm sage green with tan trim and a similar color as an accent. When I told my painter I thought I'd never hear the end of it. But the end product was stunning and even he had to admit it looked good. But for awhile all I heard was "Well why don't you just paint it PURPLE!"

houssan...the Oleanders will be leaving next spring, LOL! They have "exploded" in this area and have proven to be a poor choice. The door will have to stay for awhile although it's not my druthers it does fit my current budget...free! Stratton blue is a great color, but eggplant just makes me smile! That's how I know it's right. I will search for a "softer" eggplant but variations of the color change the whole color, if that makes sense. Thanks for the suggestion.

I agree with the first 2 comment, I think a plum or deep eggplant color that matches the plant on the right of the house would be awesome! The plant is beautiful and the plum or eggplant will definitely pop at the entrance. My eye was drawn to the plant's plum color.

I'd go with a deep wine. I'd also suggest a bolder accent above the door with the house number.

Looks like you have decided! Great choice - as for shades I think a richer darker eggplant would look better. You want there to be a great deal of contrast between the warm reds of the brick and rock, if it is a similar shade you'll loose the impact and the boldness. May I suggest you upload your photo to the Ben Moore site and try some colors just for fun. The charcoal gray of the rocks would be nice too a bit more masculine and traditional.

Take another look at the photo that you posted. I think it is telling you the right answer. See how nicely the color of the burgundy bush looks against the brick? See how out of place the blue security system sign looks against the brick on the left? I think the right answer is in the burgundy/eggplant family. Take one of the darker leaves from that bush with you to the paint store and find a good match.

One other suggestion...once you paint the door a darker color, it will draw attention to the white storm door outlining it. Do you need/use that storm door? I would eliminate it if possible so the front door can be the big, bold, beautiful statement that you want it to be.

Houssan, while I respect everyone's right to express their opinion, I think your comments were phrased in a unnecessarily harsh way. Pnewell13 wasn't even asking for input on the style of door or the plants, so definitely no need to be so critical.

Project Partners Design, Inc...great idea to take a leaf from my plant! The storm door is brand new...a freebee from the company that installed our new windows. The glass door serves the purpose of being a barrier between me and anyone at the front door and that bit of security outweighs the appearance issue.

And before it's mentioned, I plan to replace the overhead porch light. Just haven't gotten to it yet.

I think you should paint it a plum wine color, to go with that sign & plant. THEN, get one eucalyptus wreath, spray paint it the copper/verdigris finish from Modern Masters, and LA LA....you've got your wine color with turquoise (I, too, am on a turquoise kick, but it's lasted about 26 years or so, since we moved to the Southwest!)

My door is stained, so I don't speak from experience here! But you have been thinking about this for months..seems like there isn't that much work to paint a door. How about just going with the boldest color you are considering and try it?

pcmom1...I've painted my door...Chianti. And as to the "question" regarding the difficulty painting a front door...all I can say is give it a try!

I didn't have a chance to read all the posts, but there were some great suggestions. My least favorite - the blue because there are too many warm earthy tones in the brick. With so many possible color combinations, we can really change up our front door every two years if you feel like it.
Would like to see the final product posted.

I just painted our master bath (tape off mirrors, light fixtures, trying to paint around toilet, standing on ledge around tub to paint window)...that is something I will NEVER do again!

A quick thank you to everyone who offered suggestions and advice. I appreciate each of you! I am attaching several pictures of my painted front door! YEAH, its done!!!!

The paint I choose is "Chianti", a paint by Behr Premium Plus. I did as you suggested and took a leaf from the plants outside my home...and it did make the selection so much easier. :))

I must add a disclaimer here, LOL! I plan to paint the house numbers charcoal and I will replace the Oleanders which I trimmed this morning (pheww!) with, hmmm, probably ferns. Certainly something that will offer texture and keep the tropical look I'm trying to achieve. I will also change out the light fixtures in the near future.
