Kris..since you potted your clematis up..I am assuming it's one of those itty bitty clematis that Roseville puts out in orange liner pots? You did great by potting it up..remember to pinch it ..leaving 2-3 sets of leaves..this will force your clematis to focus on the Roots,which is what you really want it to do at this stage of its development.I sink those pots into my garden and keep moist...and pull it up in a couple of months to see if the roots are coming outta the bottom yet and if so that is a sign they are ready to be planted into my gardens..but IN SAYING that I must emphasize that I live in a warmer more temperate zone with a longer growing season..your clematis might be best served by being planted in Spring directly into your gardens rather than fall?..I will let others in similar zones comment to what works best for them...Jeanne

Two years ago I planted clematis when it was snowing. Last year we had 6 inches of snow the day after I planted some clematis, that was late November. Many of these were planted into the nursery bed and had to be moved this spring. Others were planted early October through November. The clematis that weren't moved are doing very well regardless of when they were planted in fall. Those that were put into the holding bed, and had to be moved this spring, aren't growing as strong.

Interesting to note: Even though the ground wasn't frozen solid until sometime after the first of the year, and I didn't move the clematis until late spring, there was little to no new root growth on the late planted clematis even though the vines were about a foot tall when moved.

Also, I have moved clematis as soon as they broke ground in spring and never seen any plant shock. I prefer moving clematis this time of year although if it is a wet spring, then moving will be delayed.

I plant anytime during the growing season.
