Culebra in the Fall

Okey, I know, it looks like crAp!!!! Broadmites in August and it never recovered completely. And I have been rough on it too.

Poor baby!

Here is how it is rewarding me!!

7 buds, and they are growing fast! I only got one blossom in early June, lets hope these will hold on this time!

The moral? Don't baby this one!! Neglect it a little!! LOL!

I know are some other people with Culebra and it may be big but it sure is ratty-looking- where are those beautiful long leaves...just has a bunch of short stubby ones that have grown out after the broadmites were vanquished.

I got this one as a 10-12" start from our own Mark in Spring 2007. I took about three cuttings last fall and two died, one made it- and Mike got that one!

I won't be cutting on this one until after it blooms and that is a maybe. I will see how the moss works on the cuttings I have going in moss right now.

They are funny looking blossoms and I remember being surprised at the size. 9-10" long and folded up like a hanky pulled from the center......with a little twist!

I'll post photos of blossoms as they arrive.

Congrats on the buds Brenda! Can't wait to see 'em opened up!
It may be ratty looking now due to the mite damage, but just wait till spring, I bet she'll fill right out for ya!

Brenda yours must have been a fast grower! Keep us posted as the buds open. I have heard that this one likes to be kept on the dry side so that is what I have been doing with mine, so far so good. I hope mine grows as well as yours when it is time to go out in the spring. Are you sure the broad mites went away since your leaves are still staying small?

Shawn, ya made me go and give my Culebra a feel!!! ;-)

The leaves are fine, nice and soft and ..........tiny!! The buds are 5" long now, longer than the leaves!
All my brugs that get to keep growing all winter are out on my deck right now, getting some brisk fresh air while they can! Frost returning in about 8-10 days! The it will be for good. Glorious weather tho, for now!

Blossoms in a week, I bet!

    Night, all!

gottahosta was this one recently moved? I have to agree with pagrdnr if the leaves are still small? Ours will drop their leaves if they are moved, don't like where they are or they are to wet. They also love more light than the rest during the winter months. I just love them due to the worms don't but the mite will do serious damage.
This one we treat with hot water and not the chemicals!
Nice job getting your to that height, can't wait to see you post the bloomers.

How exciting ....we ALL will be waiting to see the blooms next week !! It may not be putting its energy into the leaves..but I bet those blooms will be amazing !

Ok, have they opened yet ? LOL

Karma the plant was removed, pot and all, from where the pot was sunk in the ground, but no, the leaves have looked like that since September. The only roots disturbed were the ones growing out the holes in the side of the pot. I guess I scared it into blooming!! LOL! The broadmites are gone. My concern this summer was it getting too much water but it did fine! Cause we didn't have much rain at all.

Since I had such poor luck rooting it's cuttings, I have left it alone! I know Mark uses his for cuttings for his customers.
Looks kinda bonsai, doesn't it? Tortured!!

    Stay tuned next week, Kym!

gottahosta, You should have more leaves? If kept to dry the leaves stay small. You didn't scare it, you loved it enough to move it, now you get the rewards! Small pot, bottom heat and lots of light on these to get them to root.

Thanks, Karma! For when I decide to do more cuttings!

If you have the Ulrike/Preissel book check out the culebras in there, I think it is the back cover that has some huge ones.
