Well your don't have anything pink. Hagley hybrid or Marmori are nice pinks and type 3's. Here's Marmori.

Clematis "Comtesse de Bouchard" is another wonderful pruning group 3 pink..very vigorous and floriferous too!!..Jeanne

I should have mentioned earlier...though those clematis are pretty, please, no pinks. My neighbor's yard is ALL pink and ....ugh.... I have enough pink to look at. I prefer bold colors to pastels and reds/purples to pinks.

Hi kimcoco in Milwaukee...I'm in Milwaukee too. I've noticed a lot of the nurseries have been pretty much sold out of their clematis for the year. Where have you been shopping? Where did you find Prince Charles & Minuet? I have yet to spot those anywhere. I know where you can find viticella Walenberg, viticella Royal Velours, & texensis Gravetye Beauty if you like any of those. If you mail order your choices are numerous.

I actually ordered all of mine online with the exception of the Rouge Cardinal and Romantika. I found those at a local Menards - healthy, with HUGE root systems for about $10/piece. I think I saw a Royal Velours there too...but I didn't grab it b/c I didn't know it was a Viticella...I wonder if it's still there. I haven't heard of Walenberg. ??? Aside from Menards, I've been to Minor's Garden Center, but I'm not all too impressed with their selection - they seem to have the same purples that, it seems, everyone in the neighborhood has (jackmanii), and I got much better pricing online.

Where did you see those that you mentioned?

Home Depot seems to have more type 2's, and they don't look that great.

If you are willing to travel about 1/2 hour, Mileager's in Racine had some Clems as well, not the clems I was looking for, but very healthy looking. I'm sure the selection will be minimal at this time of year though.

Prince Charles I got from Koi Garden Club, and the Minuet I purchased from Silver Star Vinery. The Prince Charles is my first to bloom after I cut these back again recently, and it's growing like mad along with my Polish Spirit. Others that are growing fast are my Bonanza and Gipsy Queen.

That's funny, I got my Romantika from Menard's this year too! I can't wait to see a bloom to make sure it is really Romantika, you never know at those kind of places.

Easy about Minor's, I used to work there. If you were ever in the market for trees & shrubs, we may have met. My other plant obsessions are conifers and japanese maples. You have to get there early in the spring to get a good selection. They get a ton of clematis in from Donahue's & it sells lightning fast. If it is in bloom, it's gone. I was there in the middle of June & they had hardly any left. I still was lucky & got the very last ones of Petit Faucon, Silver Moon & Blue Angel. They had maybe 1 Royal Velours left, if it's still there.

I've been to Mileager's several times this year shopping for other plants. Their clematis is very expensive! I would much rather order online than pay those prices!

I have the luxury of having a job that I get to travel throughout SE WI & when I go to an area I check into all the nurserys in that area. If you like any of the 1's I mentioned, I wouldn't mind getting 1 for you. With the exception of Walenberg, that one is at Monchi's Farm in Colgate. My aunt lives out that way. I picked up several integrifolias, alba luxurians & Betty Corning there. I hated all the pics I've seen of Betty & was wondering what was so special about her that everyone raves about until I saw her in their display garden. Holy cow! Pics don't do her justice.

The best site to see what all these cultivars look like is at the link below. It is a great site that you can search for exactly what you are looking for (pruning group, size, color, etc.)

Chalk Hill has further reduced prices for the ones that are left to $5.98. Most of the few left are the ones with no pictures, and most of them are type 3s. It is certainly worthwhile to open COTW simultaneously with CH. A few of the 3s are pinkish, but some are more in the purple range.

And the expensive postage to you is probably half of what it is to me.

I made a preliminary list last night, but haven't sent the order yet, so please don't buy out the last of the ones on my list (at home, I'm at lunch at the office)

I thought the same thing about the Romantika, I figured I have a 50/50 chance. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Lala, I LOVE Minors - we go there all the time and Henry just rolls his eyes whenever he sees us because we practically live there. It is likely that you and I have met. Everyone there knows us by name. And, we just purchased an Emperor Japanese Maple. Henry was all upset because he found out after the fact that it was marked wrong, so we got it for $100 less than what it was supposed to be. He made a point to walk out to our car in the parking lot to tell us that. So funny. I always razz him about it.

The clematis at Minors MUST go pretty fast, and I missed the rush. I've heard from others they have a nice selection, but I had wondered what all the fuss was about because I didn't see much there. Now I know why. It was all picked over by the time I arrived.

I found Walenburg on COTW - that is absolutely beautiful.

My husband asks me, can you have TOO MANY clematis? I had to laugh at him. Of course not! I am totally addicted.

You can't find a nicer guy than Henry. It's been about 1.5 yrs since I left there. It was the best job I ever had. Nothing is more pleasurable than walking around for 8 hrs talking to customers about horticulture. At the time, I was 1 of the 3 women that worked in that dept & if you were looking for japanese maples or conifers they would set you up with me for assistance. Sound familiar?
That is great you got that maple for $100 cheaper, I couldn't get that great of deal with my discount.

The Walenburg is very pretty. It was the 1st flower that caught my eye. I would consider it a medium blue red. I know where it would go perfectly in my yard too. I didn't get it while I was there because I wasn't ready to commit to that part of the yard. I've already planted 28 this year with 10 more on the way. Yikes, this is the 1st time I counted them up. Wait til you discover the herbaceous group. When you run out of room going up you will be cramming them in crawling on the ground.

My "one more" clematis turned out to be four more! Great sale prices. Now I have a total of 18 clems. :)

Lala, if you ever come across another Walenburg, I'm definitely interested. And, if you want, I can keep an eye out for a Prince Charles and Minuet.

After computer troubles last night, I finally got my order in with no "sold out" messages.

Most of these I had never heard of before, even with my intensive forum & online catalog browsing.

White Columbine seemed to be the only atragene left that I didn't have.

Pink Cameo is a 2, but I got it because in the beginning of my addiction (before forums) I had one but it died before ever flowering, except at the nursery.

Another 2 I had wanted was Lilactime, but I deleted it to make an even number, not realizing I had forgotten to order W S Callick until after the order was in.

With the reduced pricing, this time the shipping was more than the cost of the plants.

I also got Negritianka along with Carmencita, Avant Garde (I know I said no pinks, but I thought one pink - and it's really pretty, won't do any harm), and Mary Rose (Flore Pleno).

Are they supposed to be shipping these out right away?

kimcoco, did you get your confirmation email from Chalk Hill yet? For us here in WI, they will be shipping from the end of Aug thru Sept. If I end up going out to Monchi's again, I will email you to see if you still want the Walenburg.

Obviously, I'm conditioned to notice clematis now whenever I pass someone's house, so on my daily walks around the neighborhood I couldn't help but notice that everyone has the same plum purple clematis planted on the side of their house (Texensis type I think), the only exception being my immediate neighbor. She has a very pretty spring flowering clematis that was very stunning - the flowers seemed to be irridescent, but she doesn't know what kind it is.

I love having a variety, and different from what everyone else has ("everyone else" = my neighborhood). I was discussing on an earlier post about color combinations in landscaping, and when I planted my clems along my fenceline I was approached by my neighbor, who happens to enjoy landscaping her yard in pink, pink, pink, and after seeing all my clems she asks me, "what COLOR did you plant?" LOL

Not COLORS, but COLOR. Can you imagine planting the same color clematis 18 times over? All kinds of color! And I can hardly wait for the show.

My Prince Charles is the first to bloom since I cut them back earlier in the season, and being that this is my first year with clematis, I was expecting to see pale blue flowers, but they are really more mauve, much to my pleasure. Then again, I'm sure direct sunlight would change all that.

I'm so anxious for my others to bloom and yet I'm trying to be good about pruning them to promote root growth. I'm patiently waiting, well, uh....anxiously is more like it.
