What to do depends on how dedicated a gardener you are. If it were me, I would cut them back severely and transplant them now to a more hospitable site. I would keep them well watered, fertilized with a low nitrogen fertilizer with some added phosphorus to stimulate root growth, and keep the plants mulched. Moving them now will give them time to get established in your garden before winter arrives.

If you aren't dedicated and tend to neglect your plants, I would wait until spring and move them as the buds begin to break.

I will do as you suggest. I have already cut them back so tonite I will move them to a more hospitable site. They are gorgeous clems and I would hate to lose them. And I'm a very dedicated gardener. Thanks for the advice.

I just whacked and transplanted several type II's and they are already sprouting new growth. Just make sure you keep them watered.
