old jackmanii

I have a 10+ year old Jackmanii and am just starting to learn about clems. He has a 1.5 inch thick trunk for the first 18" and then a couple of vines out of that. It looks ugly and only blooms way up the trellis. Should I cut WAY down at some point in hopes that it will put up more stems? If yes, when? ...post bloom this year or next Spring? I put in several new clems this year and will pinch, pinch, pinch to help force more stems. Thanks for your help.

Yes, you should cut it WAY down. It should put up lots of new stems though it may sulk for awhile. I'd do it now or as soon as it stops blooming.

so, cut off the trunk...6-8" above ground?...and it should send up shoots from near the ground when it's done sulking?

I have a jackamani that is about 15 years old. I cut it to the ground every year and fertilize in spring. Up until this summer it has bloomed prolifically. This year I had the usual lush foliage but only about three blossoms (all near the bottom). Any thoughts?
